Decoding Strength Ratings

What Does MPa Mean?

At Civocrete, we believe informed decisions lead to better builds, and understanding MPa is a key part of that process.

MPa stands for megapascal-a metric unit used to measure the compressive strength of concrete. In simple terms, it tells you how much pressure your concrete can handle before cracking or failing. Ordinarily, concrete strength testing happens 28 days after it’s poured, and the ratings illustrate the amount of pressure it can endure. The equation is as follows:

1 MPa = 1,000,000 pascals of pressure

According to the MPa, concrete mixes are designated for diverse purposes. Here’s a chart for easy understanding:

MPa Strength Best Suited For
25 MPa Non-structural uses like pathways, small slabs, and low-traffic areas
32 MPa General commercial/residential slabs, driveways, pavements and suspended floors
40 MPa Structural columns, beams, walls, and civil works
50 MPa High-rise buildings, bridges, industrial floors, and heavy-duty pavements

We provide expert guidance to help you select the appropriate MPa rating for your project. This ensures structural integrity, durability, and compliance with all relevant building standards.

Interesting Facts About Concrete

  • 1 cubic metre of concrete weighs approx. 2,400 kg
  • It takes about 15 wheelbarrows to move 1 cubic metre of concrete
  • To mix 1 cubic metre by hand, you’ll need: 1.5 tonnes of gravel + 0.75 tonnes of sand + 10 x 20kg bags of cement + clean water
  • To make 1 cubic metre with premix bags, you’ll need approx. 110 x 20kg premixed concrete bags
